Judges in Birmingham again ruled redrawn map violates the Voting Rights Act.
Alabama officials requested that the Supreme Court temporarily halt the rejection of the state’s redrawn electoral map. A panel of three judges in Birmingham ruled the original map violated the Voting Rights Act, unfairly reducing the majority of Black voters, who make up 27 percent of the state’s population, into one district.
This year, state legislators submitted the redrawn district map to the three federal judges. On September 5, the judges threw the new map out for upholding the same violations of the Voting Rights Act.
Alabama officials filed a request for the Supreme Court to halt the rejection of the map. Depending on what the Supreme Court decides, a new interpretation of the Voting Rights Act could have implications for the 2024 congressional election.
